Cambridge University Law Society

Socials:

We have an enviable socials calendar in Cambridge, with top quality events at great prices, and we have a fantastic committee busy organizing a wide range of social events and activities for the coming year. Events range from our headline events such as the Annual Law Ball, the Annual Dinner, and the Garden Party in each of the three terms respectively, to other old favourites such as Cocktails events, the Law Society formal and Champagne and Chocolates!

Tickets for all events will go on sale in the Law Faculty in advance. To receive details of upcoming events and ticket sales, look out for posters around the Faculty.

Non-members will be able to purchase tickets to some events but at a non-subsidised rate.

Speakers:
Kindly sponsored by:

Each year, the Law Society invites eminent speakers to address our members. The speakers' events are always free of charge for members of CULS and are followed by a drinks reception where members will have the opportunity to meet and talk to the speaker. The events are an exciting chance for Cambridge law students to hear from the leaders in their field about issues crucial to the modern legal world; not to mention their often more than passing relevance to Tripos answers!

In the past we have had the pleasure of hearing from such distinguished speakers as Justice of the Supreme Court, The Right Hon Lord Clarke of Stone-cum-Ebony; Master of the Rolls, Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury and former President of the International Court of Justice, Dame Rosalyn Higgins.

This year we hope to continue in this tradition. We have already arranged to hear from some of the most respected legal authorities in the country.  The speakers this year will include:

Alex Bailin QC, leading silk

Date: Rescheduling

Venue: Faculty of Law
Title: The Bar - the best opportunity to engage with current issues.

Described by Chambers & Partners as a barrister who "closes off problems before they arise", Alex Bailin QC is at the forefront of criminal, public administrative and human rights law. An alumnus of Emmanuel College, he has been involved in some of this year's most contentious issues, including the retention of non-convicted persons' DNA. Mr Bailin is also a member of the Bar Human Rights Committee and on the Foreign Office pro bono lawyers' panel.

Michael Caplan QC, leading Solicitor Advocate

Date: Friday 28th October 2011
Time: 13:00
Venue: Room G24, Law Faculty (Sidgwick Site)
Title: Dealing with high profile controversial cases.

Profiled by the BBC and featured as one of the Times 100 most powerful lawyers, Michael QC is one of the eight solicitors to have been appointed QC in the UK. As one of the top criminal lawyers in the country, he has been involved in many high profile cases, which have included representing former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet in extradition proceedings and advising the McCann's.

Richard Todd QC , leading silk

Date: Wednesday 30th November 2011

Last October, he successfully represented the wife in Radmacher v Granatino before the Supreme Court, a landmark case ruling pre-nuptial agreements as binding in the UK. Mr Todd has given extensive expert evidence on English law to the jurisdiction of over 10 countries.
